Happy first day of spring! It's still cold here in Northern Virginia, but the signs of spring are everywhere.

It's fun to people-watch on those first warm days -- it's like folks are leaving hibernation. You see people on street corners, jackets flung over their shoulders, eyes blinking in the sunlight. Their facial expression says, "Gosh -- there's a whole world out here!"

It's hard not to feel optimistic when spring starts. And we at Green Hour are feeling excited for another reason: our message seems to be catching on.

Take Parents Magazine -- a magazine that many moms and dads turn to for advice about raising their children. In their recent article, "How to Raise A Kid Who Loves the Earth," check out the third sentence of the article:

"Outdoor time helps kids get exercise, stimulates their senses, and promotes cognitive development."

The article goes on to suggest that kids ought to:

  • Play in the yard
  • Frolic in the Rain
  • Take a Hike
  • Visit A Nature Center
  • Plant Something
  • Climb a Tree
  • Go Camping

Amazing, isn't it? None of these activities needs an electrical outlet, batteries, or a five-page instruction book. Plus, they all are free and get kids off the couch and physically active.

Parents know a good deal when they see it.
